The ~importance of the number five in Sucker Punch.

five-items:

Clearly, I am bored. But, seeing as 5 is my favorite number and also plays a significant role in Sucker Punch, I thought I’d do a little bit of research into what the number 5 means and how it could relate to Sucker Punch.

First off, let’s point out the most important five-related things in SP:

  • Five days until the High Roller arrives.
  • Five items (map, fire, knife, key, oneself).
  • Five girls.
  • Five mentions/images of paradise. (“She’ll be in paradise.”; “Send me a postcard from paradise.”; a bottle of Paradise Rum sits on Sweet Pea’s dressing table and is used to start the fire; the theatre in the brothel is called “Paradise Theatre”; the billboard advertising the Paradise Diner.)

Now, here are some important things associated with the number five, as well as how they can be related to SP:

  • There are traditionally Five Wounds of Jesus Christ in Christianity. (Sweet Pea’s dance involves angels, demons, and martyrdom/crucifixtion. She also wears a rosary on her costume. As Sweet Pea is Babydoll’s “mirror”, Sweet Pea’s dance is symbolic of Babydoll’s sacrifice.)
  • According to ancient Greek philosophers such as Aristotle, the universe is made up of five classical elements: water, earth, air, fire, and ether. (Each of these can be associated with one of the five girls: Babydoll is Ether, Rocket is Water, Sweet Pea is Earth, Blondie is Fire, and Amber is Air.)
  • In East Asian tradition, there are five elements: water, fire, earth, wood, and metal. (Again, each corresponds to a girl: Babydoll is Water, Sweet Pea is Earth, Blondie is Fire, Amber is Metal, and Rocket is Tree.)
  • Five days of the week in the Japanese calendar are based on the five planets visible with the naked eye: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. (Again, the associations: Babydoll is Mercury, Rocket is Venus, Blondie is Mars, Sweet Pea is Jupiter, and Amber is Saturn.)
  • A Perfect fifth is the most consonant harmony, and is the basis for most western tuning systems. (A bit of a reach here, but if you like, you can link this to the importance of music in SP.)
  • Quintessence, meaning ‘fifth element’, refers to the elusive fifth element that completes the basic four elements (water, fire, air, and earth). (“The fifth thing is a mystery.”)
  • The spiritual meaning of number 5 deals with travel, adventure, and motion. With the highs that come with these attributes, 5s also carry instability and unpredictability, and radical changes. The spiritual meaning of 5 draws our attention to the wonder of life, and beckons us to appreciate the perception of chaos all around us. 5 has wild vibrations: primitive and erratic. When 5 continues to pop up in your life be prepared for some action, like a trip. Remember, trips aren’t all necessarily taken physically. Some of the best journeys are taken in the mind and spirit. (See: bolded parts. I don’t think I need to explain this.)
  • If you turn a dodecahedron around 360 degrees, it comes back to the way it was. (The “loop” of the film with the brothel world starting and ending with the lobotomy; the “mirror” of Babydoll and Sweet Pea; Rocket is saved from the Cook, likewise, she saves someone else from the Cook; the brothel world begins and ends with “Where Is My Mind?”)
  • There are also a lot of interesting meanings/symbolism associated with the number five as seen here.

And obviously I have way too much time on my hands, but there you go. This is clearly a ~serious business~ post.
